The Archive of Serbia

The building of the Archive of Serbia was erected in 1928 in the style of monumental academism according to the design by the Russian architect Nikolai Krasnov. The material in the Archive is divided in accordance with the time period from which it originates, in two basic sections, the old and the new period. The oldest collections originate from the 19th century. Only one collection and several documents are from an older period. The old period mostly comprises the archives from before the Second World War, while the new period comprises the period from the German occupation and the People’s Liberation Wars from 1941-1944 and the development after the war, as well as the materials of cooperative organizations and labor movements. The largest number of collections is part of the Category of Material of Great Importance, while the oldest document is Dečanska povelja (a charter) from 1330.
