Palilula
The city municipality of Palilula is the biggest municipality in Belgrade. It is located in the northen part of the city. Together with Stari grad and Vračar, the three municipalities form the center of the city from which they spread all the way to the outskirt regions of Stara Pazova, Zrenjanin, Pančevo, etc.
In the central part of the municipality, a large number of cultural and historical monuments is located. Apart from its architectural uniqueness, a lot of important institutions are located here, for example, the Main Post Office in Takovska street, representing an example of interwar architecture. The back of the building overlooks Tašmajdan, the central city park founded on top of an old quarry which, in turn, was situated on top of the Belgrade’s tunnels. The park has witnessed many notable historic events on the territory of Belgrade. The first Seismologic Station, still standing there to this today, was built here in 1909. Saint Mark’s Church (crkva Svetog Marka, built from 1931 until 1940), the Russian Church (1924), the Sport Center Tašmajdan, the RTS – Serbian Main Radio Television Station, and the Duško Radović Theatre are located at or around Tašmajdan.
The church of Saint Mark is one of the most beautiful buildings of sacral architecture of Serbian- Byzantine style. Up until the erection of the Saint Sava Temple, it used to be the largest Serbian church
In the longest street of Belgrade, The Boulevard of King Aleksandar Obrenović (known as the Boulevard of Revolution after WW2), which begins in the municipality of Palilula, the University Library Svetozar Marković can be found, as well as the Archives of Serbia.
Only 4 kilometers away from the city center, there is a coastal region, a previous river island called Ada Huja, rich in thermal springs of sulfuric water; during the Roman Empire, it was used as the public baths. Remains of a Celtic necropolis can also be found on the island. In the beginning of the 20th century, the island was covered with lush vegetation and vineyards, mostly due to the appropriate climate and the thermal springs. Ada Huja represents a green oasis with wild beaches.
Except for the Youth Stadion and the football club OFK (Omladinski fudbalski klub – Youth soccer club), Palilula is also famous for the Sport Center Tašmajdan alongside the Tašmajdan stadion and pools, plus the Pionir Hall, the Ice rink, etc.
